Psalm 133 – “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)u

The keyword in the scripture Unity.

God elect us to be with this family. We don’t get to choose whether or not you are going to be part of family. What we must realize is that God gives us family as a gift .and to unified us with one another there is something inside if each one of us that's needed to help us be whole. 

 Therefore we must be joined to be in Unity.

Love the people God gave you because one day when their gone you may want them again because you are connected to the person your sitting next to. 

You are a product of your family you are very important part of your family. 

This  might come as a surprise to you, but family have disagreements. . Sometimes we get angry with each other. But we need to work together to overcome disagreements and always, love each other as family,

Ephesians 1:14

Unity is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.”

The goodness of Living together as family in unity

Greek meaning 

If a part of the pie is taken out it can not be whole.

You are unified when we come together.

 God made you to participate  some of the attributes of a person beside you are in you. 

 If we can’t Demonstrate it at home we can’t demonstrate it in our churches.

.The goodness of living together in unity is so good, that the psalmist says, “Behold! Look! Marvel at what I am about to describe to you!”

God makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

 Believe the best of others, and pursue unity with your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Our unified power is something Satan can never touch.

So that’s the first thing we learn about the goodness of living together in unity. It is both good and pleasant.

And then secondly, it is appropriate for us as Christians because we are brothers and sisters together in Christ. Notice the special emphasis of the unity described here in Psalm 133: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

The word translated “good” in this verse is a word that means “excellent, agreeable, or beneficial.” In other words this is something that is good in God’s sight. He has put his stamp of approval on it. The word translated “pleasant” is a word that means “beautiful, sweet, or lovely.” In other words, it’s not only good in God’s sight, but it’s good for you too. Whether you’re a family, 

Psalm is to "go with the flow" down the mountain and outward to valleys and plains.

Only liquid can flow. So the Psalm (in classic Hebrew parallelism) gives us two liquids: oil and dew.

This is the fragrant, refreshing oil used to consecrate a priest. The priestly intent is clear because the Psalm refers to Aaron, part of Israel's priestly tribe. "Moses ordained Aaron to the priesthood by anointing his head with oil," (Leviticus 8:12).

he second liquid in Psalm 133 is the "dew of Hermon" (verse 3).

Mount Hermon is far to the north of Jerusalem (i.e. Mount Zion). Mount Hermon rises above the upper Jordan Valley. It had its share of heavy rainfall and snow.

Unity in God is a major theme in Psalm 133. "How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity" (verse 1).

I’m certain that unity was one of the prime reasons for the prayer of the Apostle Paul: ‘May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ’ (Rom. 15:5-6). Paul here revealed the grand purpose of unity: the glory of God. Obviously, the Lord is not glorified by group squabbles, disharmony, or contention. What glorifies God is like-mindedness and unity. Christian unity demonstrates that the group is controlled by the love and peace of Christ. 

Proposition:  Living in unity as believers is good and pleasant because it is the place where God pours out abundant blessing.

A.     Unity is good and pleasant because it sanctifies God’s people.

B.      Unity is good and pleasant because it refreshes God’s people.

C.      Unity is good and pleasant because it is God’s desire.

What is the Holy Spirit saying to us in this psalm? It is that if we want the oil of fragrance, the dew of freshness, and the fullness of blessing that come with a heaven-sent revival, it will be only as we dwell together in unity! Remember that high priestly prayer of our Lord when He looked into His Father’s face and said, ‘I…pray…that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us’ (John 17:20-21). It is only when Christians come together in oneness that the wind of revival begins to blow upon the church—and God's presence and power are sensed and seen among His people.”[19]

does not mean blood relatives, but a people joined by God's grace1.  The Psalm, though short, is "highly" ambitious: it calls all people to worship God. It begins at one very particular summit and cascades downward from there. It starts with a few insiders but flows outward in blessing for many.refreshing oil used

And though the oil is precious, God is not stingy with it. Indeed the oil is poured out so lavishly on the head of the priest, it runs down the beard of Aaron and onto the collar of his robe. "The generous quantity of oil adds to the picture of the community gathering as 'a sweet pleasant time together.'"2

oil signifies worship, feasting, celebration in unity. Death separates people, but resurrection promises that we will dwell in unity forever in Christ

The melting snow, or dew, flowed down into the valley. It fed the Jordan River and reached as far as the oasis of Jericho5.

  In arid country, where the rain is scarce and the rivers dry up, the land and the people depend on water that comes from a distant source. It is the scarcity of water in the dry lands, which makes Mount Hermon's dews so precious.

Like the oil that flows down the beard of Aaron, so the dew of Mount Hermon reaches far beyond its point of origin and gives life to faraway lands. God's generosity calls people to worship. And in worshiping this God of abundant life and love, we become one family.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ slakes our thirst for life and love. 

We thought that life was a scarce commodity, measured out in years and months, days and hours. But Jesus arose and opened the way to eternal life. We thought that love was reserved for a chosen few, with never enough to go around. 

Lrgenx are not born there made. 

But Jesus arose and his Word calls forth a global family of believers. And there at the high point of Easter, "the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore" (133:3). Grace flows down to us and makes us one in faith.

In our times of conflict and economic distress, 

People who are divided and estranged from one another need God's call to "live together in unity." 

Family offers hope and the promise of kinship in Christ. 

And people suffer scarcity in everything from food and housing, to justice and love. But the family message: God loves us abundantly and holds nothing back.

Easter is like the oil of blessing, bringing people together in faith. Easter is like the dew of Mount Hermon, flowing with abundant life.

CONCLUSION: So what does Psalm 133teach us about living together in unity? Living together in unity is good, it is pleasant, and it is appropriate for us as brothers and sisters in Christ. As believers we are united with Christ, and we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Christian unity is God’s gift to us – flowing down over us like precious oil on Aaron’s head or rich dew from Mount Hermon. God pours out his blessing on his people as we worship him in unity and receive his blessing of life for evermore. As we ascend nearer to God in worship, God’s blessing comes down to meet us. Of course the greatest blessing of all is just the Lord drawing near to us. 

How we need to practice unity in the body of Christ! In a few moments we will be sharing the Lord’s Supper with each other. The Lord’s Supper is a beautiful expression of our fellowship with Christ and each other. And there’s a song we sing at the end of every communion Sunday. It is a song about living together in unity, and it expresses so well what we have been talking about today: “Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love: the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.”
